How It Works
Social Security Disability is help from the government. It pays you each month if you are too sick or hurt to work. Here is how to get it.
You ask for help
You fill out a form. You tell us about your health and your past jobs. We help you get the right papers.
They look at your case
Social Security checks if you worked enough years. They also check if you are too sick to work. This takes 3 to 6 months.
You get an answer
If they say yes, your monthly disability payments start. If they say no, you can ask them to look again. Most people who ask again get a yes.
You get paid
You get a monthly disability payment. You also get health care help (Medicare) after 2 years. You may get back pay for the months you waited.
How much money will I get?
Most people get between $1,200 and $3,800 each month. The middle amount is about $1,580 a month. Your past pay sets your payment size.
